Design & Construction of a Pilot-Scale Cooling Tower

Project Overview

In this project a design of a pilot system that incorporates both a heat exchanger component and a cooling tower is constructed. A mathematical model for a counter-flow wet cooling tower is derived, which is based on one-dimensional heat and mass balance equations using the measured heat transfer coefficient.

Project Objectives

The objectives of this project are to:
  • Study the heat transfer effectiveness in cooling towers.
  • Increase the rate of heat transfer by changing the exchanger fills material and arrangements.
  •  Minimize the water usage by having an insulated cooling tower frame.
  • Take advantage of combining both induced and forced draft fans in a cooling tower.
  • Show how a cooling tower can be realistically modeled.
  • Compare experimental and analytical data of the energy performance.
