Purpose

To ensure students exiting the Preparatory Program have achieved the proper English language skills to perform well in the Core Program and at the college level. PMU has introduced the APTIS test (subject to change as per approval by PMU Management) for an objective assessment of the students’ English language skills.

Statement :

As per PMU system, all students in the Preparatory Program are required to take an internationally recognized external exit test.

Procedure :

1. All Preparatory Year Program students are required to take Aptis and achieve the required score to successfully exit each level.

2. All students are required to take Standardized Exam 1 (SE1) and SE2 as a prerequisite to take the exit test.

3. The students’ promotion to the next level will be solely determined by the exit test result.

4. The exit test will be administered according to PMU final examination policy.

5. All exit tests will be administered through the PMU Testing Center.

6. All exit tests will be proctored by Preparatory Department faculty.

7. In case of technical difficulties, students will be called to retake the particular component.

8. Students will be placed according to the following CEFR levels:

9. All new students entering the Preparatory Program will be required to take Aptis.

10. In case a new student scores “B2” or above on Aptis, he/she will be required to take the IELTS exam through the PMU Testing Center and achieve the required IELTS score to be admitted into the Core Program.

11. If the student feels that he/she is eligible for direct entry into the Core Program, he / she will be required to take the IELTS through the PMU Testing Center or any other authorized testing center.

12. All results of the exit test will be disseminated from the Testing Center coordinator to the Dean of Preparatory Year Program.  The Dean’s office will forward the results to the Chair and the Associate Chair to be entered in Banner.

13. Exit test results will be made available to students through Banner.

14. Students will be placed or promoted according to the result of their CEFR overall and writing scores as shown in Table 1.0.
