About Electrical Engineering

Electrical engineering is involved in every aspect of our life and hence it is the largest engineering profession. From power generation and transmission to computers and telecommunications and from Microsystems and robotics to biomedical instruments/machines and navigation systems, electrical engineers play an essential role by providing innovative solutions.

With the expansion of industries and commercial services, new technologies such as smart power networks, novel telecommunication and control systems need to be developed in order to provide sustainable solutions with reduced environmental impact. Such developments would require an increasing number of highly-skilled electrical engineers to meet the emerging challenges.

The EE program in PMU focuses on the following tracks:
Electrical Power Systems: covering the design of electrical machinery, transformers and variable speed drives. It also covers the study of both fundamental aspects of electric power generation, transmission and distribution and advanced topics such as power system analysis, steady state and fault analysis, power system stability and smart grid technologies. Electrical power engineers have career opportunities in a diverse range of sectors such as electricity supply industries, manufacturing, consulting and design, renewable energy, marine and aerospace technologies.

Communication Systems: covering the study and design of communications systems including electronic equipment for use in a telecommunications network or infrastructure. These include cellular telephone networks, broadband systems and other cutting-edge technologies. This field also covers the study of both analog and digital communication systems, and advanced subjects such as wireless and RF communication systems. Telecommunications engineers enjoy job opportunities in a number of industries such as wired and wireless communications companies, electronics components manufacturers, telecommunications, medical instrumentation sector and engineering consulting or design firms.

EE Program Highlights

  • Offers a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Electrical Engineering with concentration in communication systems and power systems.

  • Students gain a broad range of skills in communication, basic sciences, and engineering principles.
  • Students acquire in-depth knowledge in telecommunications and signal processing, control systems and robotics, electronics, digital systems, microprocessors and power systems.
  • The technical courses emphasize using advanced numerical tools (e.g. MATLAB, Multisim , LabVIEW, ETAP) for analysis, modeling, and simulation of electrical systems.
  • Students acquire hands-on experience through emphasis on practical problem solving, design capability, laboratory work, and senior design projects.

The primary mission of the Department of Electrical Engineering at PMU is multifold:

  • to prepare its students to meet current and future needs of the national industry and government agencies, and to become productive professionals and leaders,
  • to enhance and expand the knowledge in Electrical Engineering by conducting research and scholarly activity, and
  • to reach out to the community and the profession through innovative services and solutions.
