Design of Energy Harvesting by Shock Absorber

Project Overview

Energy-harvesting shock absorbers are able to recover the energy otherwise dissipated in the suspension vibration while simultaneously suppressing the vibration induced by road roughness. A lot of energy is lost in automobiles and any system that involves vibrations in the form of oscillating motion. Ocean waves also involve oscillating motion similar to vibrations. This design involves capturing these oscillatory motion and utilizing it for harvesting energy. Vibrations in automobiles can be captured through shock absorbers installed as suspension systems. The key component is a unique motion mechanism to convert oscillating motion into continuous rotary motion through mechanisms of Sun and planetary gears or some other idea. Energy-harvesting shock absorbers are able to recover the energy otherwise dissipated in the suspension vibration while simultaneously suppressing the vibration induced by road roughness. They can work as a controllable damper as well as an energy generator. An innovative design of regenerative shock absorbers is proposed in this paper, with the advantage of significantly improving the energy harvesting efficiency and reducing the impact forces caused by oscillation.

Project Objectives

  • Capture wasted energy and convert it to useful energy.
  • Decrease fuel consumption, where it will help clean the environment of fuel emission.
  • Come up with an economical and effective design of a Regenerative shock absorber, where it’s feasible and accessible (low cost but efficient).
  • Applicable for and kind of automobile.
  • Work on the geometrical constrains, what material to use, and what mechanism to apply.
