Organic Chemistry I with Laboratory |
This is a standard college level first course in Organic Chemistry. Organic Chemistry I is the first semester of a one-year course sequence. Lecture component: Students will learn the theories and principles of isolation, purification, characterization, and compositional analysis of organic molecules through techniques such as thin-layer and column chromatography, gas chromatography, infrared spectroscopy, melting point, and distillation. Laboratory component: This is the laboratory component of Organic Chemistry I which is taken concurrently with Organic Chemistry I. It is an introductory organic chemistry laboratory that covers basic techniques (distillation, crystallization, chromatography, MP and BP), reactions (substitution, elimination, Diels-alder, oxidation-reduction), instrumentation (gas and liquid chromatography, IR). |

Sociology is the scientific study of society and social interaction, and their effects on individual and group behavior. This basic introductory sociology course will provide an introduction to the concepts, theories, and methods used by sociologists to study social life and the analysis of human societies, organizations and groups, and the interrelations among individuals, groups, and societies. Special attention is given to how the sociological perspective can enhance our ability to understand society and to function within it. The course will take account of how gender, race, ethnicity, and social class impact people's lives, and devote a fair portion of time looking at the role of inequalities across these categories, from several theoretical perspectives. It will also consider how social forces and social structures impact the everyday experiences of people. After taking this course, students should understand the sociological perspective and the tools to comprehend the connection between the events of students' own life and the social world around them. |

Community Medicine (Longitudinal Years 1&2) |
This longitudinal course provides students with early clinical exposure at the start of the medical program in Year 1. The information students learn in the classroom is integrated throughout the community-based clinical experience. Students get the unique opportunity to become part of a medical team as well as gain a greater understanding of the roles of patient care professionals and the hospital community as a team caring for the patient. In this course, students will meet twice a month where they will spend once a month learning in the classroom and once a month in the community which will provide early insight into basic doctoring skills such as daily patient intake, health checkups, and screening activities. Course components include community based clinical experiences, interactive large group seminars, and small group sessions for reflection of clinical sessions. Through the opportunity to engage in the community, students will feel what is like to empower the community and becoming an integral part of it. This course enables students to get clinical exposure from Day 1 incorporating knowledge of societal issues and community resources and understanding the importance of self-learning through the classroom and hands-on approaches. |

Medicine as a Profession (Longitudinal Years 1&2) |
The goal of this longitudinal course is to introduce students to the scope of the profession of medicine, its history, and its evolving role in society. There are 4 mini discussion sections of the course designed to explore important components of the profession as students transition to the upper-level years of the medical program. The four sequential discussion topics are: The Scope of Medicine; The Evolution of Medicine; Medicine, Society and Health Policy; The Art and Science of Medicine. Courses are developed and updated by medical school faculty and the curriculum is reviewed and revised annually. At the end of the course, students will complete a thesis project where they will integrate course topics and reflect on what they learned in the course. This student-proposed project will require faculty approval and is intended to provide students with an individualized learning experience to satisfy curiosity of the intellect and connect more deeply with a faculty supervisor. |
