Under the supervision of the Division of Student Affairs, the Department of Health Care Dr. Mohammad Hussain Qadri and his team in both male and female campuses organized an educational and health awareness on this World Diabetes Day for PMU students to check their blood pressure as well as their diabetes on a regular basis. Many students visited the clinic and got their blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), and blood sugar screening checked. World Diabetes Day raises global awareness of diabetes, and its escalating rates are quite alarming. There is a rapid increase in new cases of type 2 diabetes in the age group of 30 to 39 years and in children and adolescents is of special concern. World Diabetes Day is celebrated every year on 14th of November to mark the birthday of Frederick Banting who, along with Charles Best, was instrumental in the discovery of insulin in 1922, a life-saving treatment for diabetes patients. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that more than 220 million people world-wide have diabetes. This startling number is likely to more than double by 2030 without intervention. Furthermore, approximately 80% of diabetes deaths occur in low and middle-income countries. Given the fact, the Department of Health Care distributed brochures and materials to all visiting students, staff, and faculty.
