Apart from course selection and semester scheduling, preparatory program students have the right to receive quality academic advising services regarding their academic progress and future major selection. Preparatory program students do want to know what is expected of them at the college level. During the preparatory program, students also have expectations of their mentors. They need to co-explore with the academic advisors their academic weaknesses and strengths. They also need guidance. Research on academic advising indicates that there is a strong relationship between effective advising and student retention and success. The literature also considers effective student advising to have a positive impact on students’ learning outcomes and their willingness to complete their degree on time.
