Design of Wastewater Treatment Plant in the Industrial Area of Al-Jubail City

Project Overview

This project aims to design a wastewater treatment plant near to the industrial area in AL-Jubail city. The objective of the project is to select a suitable location for the proposed wastewater treatment plant, then decide about typical wastewater characteristics based on literature review and previous studies. After that, an estimation of the volume of the wastewater generated from the industrial area targeted in the period of 25 years. After that we have mainly three treatment units to be designed, starting with the Aeration tank design, then sedimentation tank and finally doing the filtration tank design. In addition, the project includes the hydraulic design of the pipe connecting the treatment units. The maximum flow rate was estimated to be of 0.247 𝑚3 per 𝑠𝑒𝑐 to serve an estimated population of 89000 capita in the design period of 25 years. The Aeration tank has been designed as a rectangular tank with a dimension of 80 x 8 x 4 m3, followed by a secondary sedimentation tank which has been designed as a circular tank with a diameter of 11.2 meters and a depth of 4.5 meters. Finally, the filtration tank has been designed as a rectangular tank with a dimension of 8.5 x 6.5 x 3 m3 for its length, width, and depth, respectively. Moreover, the pipe connecting the tanks has been designed to be with a diameter of 1 meter with a slope ratio of 1:650. Finally, the structural design has been checked using SAP2000 program to perform the structural hand calculations, which gives almost the same values. It needs to be noted that adequate plant maintenance would extend the design time and reduce the likelihood of issues that would force the plant to shut down or reduce its production.

Project Objectives

  1. To find an appropriate site for the planned wastewater treatment plant in the Al-Jubail neighborhood.
  2. Estimate the population that will be serviced by the WWTP.
  3. Design the three main units required for the WWTP which is aeration, sedimentation and filtration tanks.
  4. Hydraulic and structural design of the three units.
  5. Cost Estimation of the WWTP.
  6. Finally, conclusions and recommendations about the WWTP.
