Piston Force Calculations

  • Because the piston is in equilibrium, this force is equal to the pressure force on the piston:
    P1A1 =823N
    A1 = Πd2 / 4 = Π(0.191)2 / 4 = 0.0286m2
    P1 = 823 / 0.0286 = 2.87 * 104N/m2
  • Now we know the pressure in the liquid. Therefore, we can solve for the force on the mechanism and the top platform. Since surfaces 1 and 2 are at the same elevation.
  • Thus,
    F2 = P1A2
    F2 = 2.87 * 104N/m2 * Π/4(1.8)2 = 72.99KN
