Student Field Trip: Baker Hughes Factory Visit

On November 5th, 2015 the class of Material Engineering (MEEN 2211) took a field trip to Baker Hughes company, the field trip was attended by the whole class and guided by Dr. Abdulaziz Almathami. All 24 members visited three destinations: Baker Hughes Headquarter, Research and Development Center, and Baker Hughes factory. After a presentation in the head quarter about the company and the different type of drilling used for each design, students visited the Research and Development lab where they saw how the materials were chosen in the designing process.

At the Baker Hughes factory, Safety tips were first given, after which students saw how the drilling process was done. A demonstration of building a new drill from the start with tungsten carbide powder was also shown to them.
 

Conclusion

The field trip succeeded in providing practical knowledge of theoretical concepts taught in the classroom, It was specifically targeted to students taking class MEEN 2211.
Student field trips are key component for a successful upcoming engineer.
